DBT is considered to be the gold standard treatment protocol for people with BPD. Unfortunately, it is hard to find a local BPD group. This 10 week starter pack will introduce you to the practice of mindfulness with guided meditation exercises.
Mindfulness is an ancient Bhuddist practice in which the person simply is present in the moment. It means not allowing yourself to be distracted by other stimuli and being able to be where you are.
Mindfulness was first introduced to North America by Dr. JonKabat-Zinn who popularized it as a way to help people cope with the stress in their lives. When Marsha Linehan was putting her Dialectical Behavioural Therapy program together, she knew that the key piece was being able to “accept.” She incorporated the practice of mindfulness into DBT so that clients could learn how to accept their past instead of constantly being at war with it.
Mindfulness is the core fundamental practice of DBT. She realized that learning mindfulness rather than simply including meditation.was integral to changing behaviour. This is because if you don’t notice what is going on around you, you can not notice your feelings about it.Being mindful is what allows the client to do that. Does this mean you have to condone what happened to you in your past. No, far from it.
Acceptance is really hard for most people. The last DBT skill you learn is called Radical Acceptance. It was the skill I struggled with the most but also the one which has helped me the most.
